If you are looking for tiles, you’ll almost certainly run across the “R” rating system. The letter R is followed by a number (13, 12, 11, 10, or 9). But what do anti-slip tile ratings and grades signify, and how can they help you choose the best tiles for your needs?

In this article, we’ll discuss anti-slip tile ratings and grades, recommend applications for each rating, and even include examples of R9-R12 tiles so you know what’s already on the market.

R13 and R9 Tile Ratings and Grades

The ‘R’ grading system denotes a non-slip surface. The degree of the anti-slip coating is indicated by this letter and number combination. Not all tiles have anti-slip ratings, but tiles designed to give grip frequently do. The ‘R’ stands for ‘ramp test,’ and the number after it indicates its anti-slip rating (13 is strong, 9 is mild).

R12 Anti-slip Tiles

This anti-slip tile rating category includes most unglazed tiles as well as some glazed tiles, and is generally regarded as safe for installation in areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways, as well as commercial areas of varying sizes, ranging from communal showers and lavatories, poolsides, and changing rooms, to hotel foyers, shopping centres, and airports.

DOs: Use porcelain tiles both indoors and outdoors as a strong flooring solution for locations where you want to create a smooth kitchen-to-patio or garden transition.

DOs: Do not rely on R12 tiles to avoid slippage on extremely steep slopes. If you’re tiling a business area and want to protect yourself against accident claims, R13 tiles are the best choice.

Example of a Product: All leading tile manufacturers and exports provide an R12 slip resistance rating and are suitable for non-slip floor tiles in commercial kitchens and storerooms. These non-slip porcelain tiles are also appropriate for outdoor use.

R12 Anti-slip Tiles

You may also come across R13 anti slide tiles when travelling. These anti-slip tile grades offer the maximum slip resistance, however, we do not stock them owing to customer comment that they are extremely difficult to clean. R12 tiles, in our opinion, will meet all of your needs in both residential and commercial situations.

Anti-Slip Tiles R11

Floor tiles in the R11 anti-slip tile rating group, like the R12, are regarded as secure for both dry and wet settings, making them ideal for usage in residential situations ranging from wetter areas like bathrooms and kitchens, to corridors and even living rooms.

If you are building workplace flooring, you should also choose R11 tiles since they are both hard-wearing, saving you money on floor replacements, and strong, saving you money on minor injury claims.

DOs: Take advantage of the textured anti-slip coating to create lovely (and safe!) outdoor spaces on your patio and in your garden.

R10 Anti-slip Tiles

Anti-slip tile ratings of R10 are commonly used to avoid slippage in household circumstances and will be ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. They may also be utilized as exterior floor tiles (porcelain variants only) or commercial tiles due to their anti-slip features.

While R10 tiles are often glazed matt tiles that work as anti-slip when wet, you may also find some unglazed tiles in this grade. R10 tiles are a suitable match for living rooms and corridors, where occasional spills and moisture can occur, in addition to bathrooms (where they should be used in conjunction with a bathmat).
